Midfexo M Syrup 60ml

Midfexo M Syrup 60ml is a combination medication containing Fexofenadine, a non-drowsy antihistamine and Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist. This drug is primarily prescribed to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and to manage chronic respiratory conditions in which allergic inflammation plays a significant role. Fexofenadine provides rapid relief from immediate allergy symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, and itching. Montelukast works more deeply by blocking leukotrienes, chemicals that cause long-term inflammation and swelling in the airways and nasal passages. The combination offers comprehensive, dual-action control for severe and persistent allergy symptoms and allergic asthma.

Detailed Description

Midfexo M Syrup 60ml is a powerful, non-steroidal pill that combines two different medicines to manage your severe allergies and asthma over a long period. Think of it as a two-in-one treatment:

The Quick-Relief Medicine (Fexofenadine). This part is a modern type of antihistamine. When you have an allergic reaction, your body releases a chemical called histamine, which causes immediate, annoying symptoms like sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy eyes. Fexofenadine works quickly to block that histamine, stopping those symptoms fast. The best part? It's known as "non-drowsy," meaning it won't usually make you feel sleepy like older allergy pills, so it’s great for daytime use.

The Long-Term Control Medicine (Montelukast). This component targets a deeper type of inflammation. Besides histamine, your body releases other chemicals called leukotrienes. These leukotrienes cause deep, persistent problems like swelling in your nose and tightening in your breathing tubes (bronchial tubes), which contribute to asthma and chronic stuffiness. Montelukast blocks these leukotrienes, helping to calm down that long-term swelling and keep your airways open.

Uses of Midfexo M Syrup 60ml

Midfexo M Syrup 60ml is indicated for the treatment and management of various allergic and inflammatory conditions:

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever):

Relief of symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion.

Perennial Allergic Rhinitis:

Management of year-round allergy symptoms.

Chronic Urticaria (Hives):

Treatment of chronic idiopathic hives and associated itching.

Prophylaxis and Chronic Treatment of Asthma:

Used in combination with other necessary asthma medication, particularly in patients whose asthma is complicated by allergies.

Benefits of Midfexo M Syrup 60ml

Comprehensive Symptom Control:

Effectively manages both immediate symptoms (Fexofenadine) and underlying inflammation/airway constriction (Montelukast).

Non-Sedating Relief:

Fexofenadine is known for its low potential to cause drowsiness compared to older antihistamines, allowing patients to maintain alertness.

Once-Daily Dosing:

The formulation allows for convenient once-daily use, which promotes better patient compliance.

Reduced Airway Inflammation:

Montelukast component helps to reduce chronic swelling and mucus in the nasal passages and bronchial tubes, improving breathing and preventing asthma symptoms.

Improved Quality of Life:

By controlling severe allergic symptoms, the medication significantly improves sleep, daytime function, and overall quality of life.

Side Effects of Midfexo M Syrup 60ml

Side effects are generally infrequent and mild. Contact your doctor if any side effect persists or concern you.

Common Side Effects (Usually Mild and may lessen with continued use):
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness or Fatigue (usually mild)
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea or Indigestion
  • Dry mouth
Serious Side Effects (Stop taking the medicine and seek urgent medical attention if you experience):

  • Mood or Behaviour Changes (Neuropsychiatric Events): New onset or worsening of anxiety, agitation, aggression, depression, nightmares, insomnia, or suicidal thoughts (linked to Montelukast). Seek immediate medical advice if these occur.
  • Liver Problems: Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), dark urine, or persistent vomiting.
  • Churg-Strauss Syndrome: Rarely, Montelukast can be associated with the development of systemic vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels).

Directions for Use

  • Follow your doctor's instructions: Always take Midfexo M Syrup 60ml exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Dosing: The standard dose is one tablet (Fexofenadine + Montelukast) taken once daily.
  • Timing: This medication is often recommended to be taken in the evening or at bedtime, as this is typically when Montelukast's effect is most beneficial for nocturnal symptoms, and to mitigate any mild drowsiness.
  • How to take it: Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
  • Duration of treatment: Continue taking the medicine for the entire duration prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure effective long-term control of inflammation.

How it works

Midfexo M Syrup 60ml employs a two-pronged mechanism to treat allergic inflammation:

  1. Fexofenadine (Antihistamine Action): Fexofenadine is a highly selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical released by the body (mast cells) during an allergic reaction. By preventing histamine from binding to H1 receptors, Fexofenadine rapidly reduces immediate symptoms such as itching, sneezing, watery eyes, and a runny nose.
  2. Montelukast (Leukotriene Receptor Antagonism): Montelukast is a potent and orally active compound that selectively antagonises the CysLT1 receptor. Leukotrienes are powerful inflammatory mediators released from mast cells and eosinophils that cause sustained bronchoconstriction, increased vascular permeability, and enhanced secretion of mucus. By blocking the CysLT1 receptor, Montelukast inhibits the actions of these leukotrienes, reducing chronic swelling, inflammation, and muscle tightening in the airways and nasal passages.

This combination provides superior and broader coverage by simultaneously addressing both the immediate (histamine-mediated) and prolonged (leukotriene-mediated) phases of allergic response.

Safety Advice for Midfexo M Syrup 60ml

icon
Pregnancy
CONSULT DOCTOR.

Use only if clearly needed and the benefit outweighs the potential risk. Safety data in pregnancy is limited.

icon
Breastfeeding
CONSULT DOCTOR.

Both salts pass into breast milk. Use only if the risk to the infant is justified by the mother's clinical need.

icon
Alcohol
CAUTION.

While Fexofenadine is non-sedating, alcohol may increase the risk of drowsiness or impaired judgment. Limit consumption.

icon
Driving
CAUTION.

Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Midfexo M Syrup 60ml affects you, as it commonly causes dizziness.

Diet
DO NOT TAKE WITH FRUIT JUICES

(especially grapefruit, orange, or apple juice). These juices can significantly reduce the absorption and effectiveness of Fexofenadine. Take with water only.

icon
Elderly Patients

Generally safe. No specific dose adjustment is usually needed for Fexofenadine or Montelukast in the elderly, but monitoring for any unusual side effects is recommended.

Quick Tips for Midfexo M Syrup 60ml

  • Take with Water Only: To ensure the full benefit of Fexofenadine, take your tablet with a glass of plain water, not fruit juices (like orange or grapefruit juice).
  • Consistency is Key: For the Montelukast component to work effectively in controlling inflammation, take the tablet regularly every day, even when you feel well.
  • Evening Dose: Taking it in the evening is often recommended to help control nighttime symptoms and asthma flares.
  • Asthma Warning: Midfexo M Syrup 60ml is for long-term control. It is not a rescue inhaler for sudden, acute asthma attacks. Always carry your prescribed bronchodilator (e.g., Albuterol/Salbutamol) for emergencies.
  • Monitor Mood: Be aware of any changes in mood, behaviour, or sleep patterns, as these are potential side effects of Montelukast. Report them to your doctor immediately.

Storage Advice

  • Store Midfexo M Syrup 60ml at room temperature, typically between 20 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius (68 degrees F and 77 degrees F).
  • Keep the medication in a cool, dry place, protected from excessive moisture and direct light.
  • Keep the tablets strictly out of the reach and sight of children and pets.

Drug-Food Interaction

  • Food: Can be taken with food, but its absorption may be slightly decreased. It is generally recommended to take it consistently (either always with or always without food).
  • Fruit Juices: Avoid consuming fruit juices (especially grapefruit, orange, and apple juice) within 4 hours of taking the tablet, as they significantly reduce the effectiveness of Fexofenadine.

Interactions with Other Drugs

  • Antacids (Containing Aluminium or Magnesium): Antacids can significantly reduce the absorption of Fexofenadine. Take antacids at least 2 hours apart from Midfexo M Syrup 60ml.
  • Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, or Rifampin: These drugs can increase the blood levels of Fexofenadine and Montelukast, increasing the risk of side effects.
  • Phenobarbital, Phenytoin: These drugs can decrease the blood levels of Montelukast, potentially reducing its effectiveness.
  • Ritonavir: May increase the levels of both components.

Drug-Disease Interactions

This medicine may require caution or dose adjustment in certain conditions:

  • Kidney Disease (Renal Impairment): Fexofenadine is mainly eliminated by the kidneys. If you have severe kidney impairment, the Fexofenadine dose may need to be adjusted (typically to 60mg once daily) to prevent accumulation.
  • Liver Disease (Hepatic Impairment): Montelukast is metabolised by the liver. While generally safe, caution is advised in patients with severe liver disease.
  • Mental Health Issues/Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Caution is advised in patients with a history of depression or behavioural problems, as Montelukast has been linked to potential neuropsychiatric side effects.

Daily Dose

The specific daily dose is one tablet (Fexofenadine + Montelukast) taken once daily. The dose should not be exceeded.

Overdose

An overdose of Midfexo M Syrup 60ml may cause symptoms like severe dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and a rapid heartbeat. In the event of a suspected overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

What If You Forget to take Midfexo M Syrup 60ml?

If you miss a dose of Midfexo M Syrup 60ml, take it as soon as you remember. If it is already close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
