It blocks the action of a chemical messenger (histamine) which is responsible for red, itchy, watery eyes. Methylcellulose is a lubricant similar to natural tears. It provides temporary relief from burning and discomfort in the eye. Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate is an antimicrobial preservative.
