Yes, diarrhea is a common side effect of Acarbose, though not everyone will experience it. Carbohydrate-containing foods, such as cane sugar, may exacerbate diarrhea and abdominal pain. Contact your doctor if diarrhea is persistent or severe.
Acarbose should be avoided by individuals allergic to it, those with severe liver disease, intestinal inflammation or ulceration (e.g., Crohn’s disease), intestinal obstruction, large hernias, or malabsorption disorders. It is also contraindicated for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Acarbose should be taken with meals, either swallowed whole with water or chewed with the first mouthful of food. The initial dose is typically twice daily, gradually increasing to three times daily.
Acarbose does not independently cause hypoglycemia, but it may lower blood sugar levels when used with other antidiabetic medications or insulin. Consult your doctor if hypoglycemia occurs, as they may adjust your dosage.
If you miss a dose of Acarbose, do not take it between meals. Wait for your next scheduled dose and meal, and continue as prescribed. Do not double the dose to compensate for the missed one.
Acarbose inhibits carbohydrate digestion, leading to undigested carbohydrates in the colon. Bacterial fermentation of these carbohydrates produces gas, resulting in flatulence and abdominal discomfort.
Taking more than the recommended dose of Acarbose may lead to increased flatulence, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. It is advisable to avoid carbohydrate-containing meals or drinks for 4-6 hours.
