Artemether is used in the treatment of malaria. It is not intended for the prevention of malaria or for the treatment of severe malaria, which affects the brain, lungs, or kidneys.

How Artemether works Artemether is an antiparasitic medication that functions by generating harmful chemicals, known as free radicals, within the malarial parasite, ultimately leading to its death.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Artemether include headache, dizziness, weakness, muscle pain, joint pain, vomiting, decreased appetite, cough, and fever.

Expert Advice

  • Artemether should be taken with food or drinks enriched with fat, such as milk.
  • Do not skip any doses and complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel better.
  • This medication may cause dizziness and sleepiness; use caution while driving or performing tasks that require concentration.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are in the first three months of pregnancy.
  • Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
  • Notify your doctor if you experience flu-like symptoms such as chills, fever, muscle pains, or any changes in heartbeat.
  • You may be required to undergo regular blood tests once a week while taking this medication.
