Atazanavir is used in the treatment of HIV infection.

How it Works

How Atazanavir works Atazanavir is an anti-HIV medication. It works by interfering with an enzyme called protease, which is necessary for HIV-infected cells to produce new viruses. This action halts the production of new viruses.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Atazanavir include rash, headache, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, cough, muscle pain, jaundice, fever, and increased bilirubin levels in the blood.

Expert Advice

Atazanavir should be taken with food.
Do not skip any doses; complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
Avoid taking antacids one hour before or two hours after taking Atazanavir.
It may cause dizziness or sleepiness. Do not drive or engage in activities that require concentration until you know how it affects you.
Discontinue medications prescribed for erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil or tadalafil, while undergoing treatment with this medicine.
Your doctor may monitor your liver function regularly.
Inform your doctor if you experience abdominal pain, loss of appetite, darkened urine, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).
Notify your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
