Imipenem and Cilastatin are used in the treatment of severe bacterial infections.

How it Works

How Imipenem and Cilastatin work Imipenem and Cilastatin is a combination of two medicines: Imipenem and Cilastatin. Imipenem is an antibiotic that works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering, which is essential for the survival of bacteria in the human body. Cilastatin is a dehydropeptidase I inhibitor that blocks the activity of an enzyme (dehydropeptidase I) responsible for the breakdown of Imipenem. This action helps Imipenem remain active in your body for a longer period of time.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Imipenem and Cilastatin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, thrombophlebitis, and increased liver enzymes.

Imipenem + Cilastatin is used to treat severe bacterial infections, including those acquired in hospitals and those involving various types of bacteria.
It is administered via a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) over 20 to 60 minutes.
Notify your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin, as this medication should be avoided or used with caution in patients with a penicillin allergy.
Your doctor may monitor your liver and kidney function during treatment with this medication.
Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should resolve once your course is complete.
Inform your doctor if diarrhea persists or if you notice blood in your stools.
Notify your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
