How colloidal bismuth subcitrate works Colloidal bismuth subcitrate is believed to work through several mechanisms. First, it increases the secretion of mucus glycoproteins and may also bind to the gastric mucus layer, acting as a diffusion barrier to hydrochloric acid. Additionally, it is known to have a cytoprotective effect and enhances the mucosal secretion of prostaglandins and bicarbonate.

Side Effects

Common side effects of colloidal bismuth subcitrate include black tongue, dark-colored stool, nausea, vomiting, bone toxicity, and joint toxicity.
