How Desogestrel works Desogestrel is a progestin, a type of female hormone. It functions by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary and inhibiting the fertilization of the egg by sperm. Additionally, it may alter the lining of the uterus and increase the thickness of cervical mucus to help prevent pregnancy.
