How Disulfiram works Disulfiram inhibits the enzyme responsible for breaking down the metabolized form of alcohol in the body. This results in elevated levels of the metabolized form of alcohol, leading to unpleasant physical reactions when consuming alcohol.

  • Disulfiram is used in conjunction with behavior modification, psychotherapy, and counseling support to assist you in stopping drinking.
  • It is most effective for patients who can achieve initial abstinence of at least 12 hours, are committed to maintaining abstinence, and agree to take the medication.
  • While taking this medication, avoid alcohol in all forms, including:
    • Beer
    • Wine
    • Aftershave lotions
    • Mouthwash
    • Vinegar
    • Certain desserts
    • Colognes
    • Liquid medications
  • When you first start taking Disulfiram, you may experience dizziness, confusion, tiredness, and weakness.
  • Avoid driving or engaging in activities that require mental focus until you understand how the medication affects you.
  • You may notice an aftertaste of either garlic or metal when you begin taking Disulfiram; inform your doctor if this does not resolve.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of:

    • Liver or kidney disease

    • Allergies to latex rubber or pesticides
  • Do not take Disulfiram if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
