Ritonavir is used in the treatment of HIV infection.

How it Works

How Ritonavir works Ritonavir is an anti-HIV medication. It functions by interfering with an enzyme called protease, which is necessary for HIV-infected cells to produce new viruses. This action halts the production of new viruses.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Ritonavir include taste changes, nausea, diarrhea, paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation), vomiting, fatigue, increased triglyceride levels in the blood, and joint pain.

Expert Advice

Ritonavir should be taken with food.
Do not skip any doses, and complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
Avoid taking antacids one hour before or two hours after taking Ritonavir.
Ritonavir may cause dizziness or sleepiness; do not drive or engage in activities that require concentration until you know how it affects you.
Discontinue medications prescribed for erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil or tadalafil, while undergoing treatment with this medicine.
Your doctor may monitor your liver function regularly.
Inform your doctor if you experience abdominal pain, loss of appetite, darkened urine, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).
Notify your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
