Rucaparib is used in the treatment of prostate cancer and ovarian cancer.

How it Works

How Rucaparib works Rucaparib prevents cancer cells from repairing their damaged DNA by blocking certain proteins, which ultimately leads to their death.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Rucaparib include nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), rash, increased liver enzymes, decreased appetite, anemia (low red blood cell count), weakness, gastrointestinal disturbances, myelodysplastic syndrome, and acute myeloid leukemia (a type of blood cancer).

Expert Advice

Before taking Rucaparib, inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including:
- Prescription medications
- Over-the-counter medications
- Vitamins
- Herbal remedies
After starting your treatment with Rucaparib, you may be at an increased risk of infection. Therefore, it is advisable to:
- Avoid crowds
- Avoid contact with individuals who have colds
Immediately report any fever or signs of infection to your doctor.
Drink at least two to three quarts of fluid every 24 hours, unless otherwise instructed.
To help reduce nausea:
- Take antinausea medications as prescribed by your doctor
- Eat small, frequent meals
Females who are capable of becoming pregnant should:
- Use effective birth control during treatment
- Continue using effective birth control for at least 6 months after the last dose of Rucaparib
Avoid breastfeeding during treatment with Rucaparib and for 2 weeks after the last dose.
If you are a male with a female partner who is pregnant or able to conceive, you should:
- Use effective birth control (e.g., condom) during treatment
- Continue using effective birth control for 3 months after the last dose of Rucaparib
